What is gut health?

Our gut health is the health of our overall digestive system.  which is also known as our second brain,  rightly so because there are trillions of microorganisms living in it! They have a role to play on how we feel, how healthy we are and believe it or not what decisions that we make!

These organisms are of two types – the good ones and the bad! Our gut health is considered good if the good ones outnumber the bad ones.

Watch out for these signals which are a warning sign that the bad bacteria has taken over!

  1. Mental health issues like anxiety, depression, mood swings.
  2. Digestive issues like bloating, gas, acidity, indigestion, constipation or diahoerea
  3. Lowered immunity, falling sick frequently.
  4. Skin problems like acne, eczema, psoriasis
  5. Low energy levels - feeling tired all the time, fatigued.
  6. Allergies and auto-immune disorders.

But nature and science has given us solutions to fight those bad bacteria.

Before we dive into the world of solutions let’s understand some jargons related to gut microbiome, the so called probiotics and prebiotics.

  • Probiotics are the live good bacteria. They help in digestion and boosting the immunity and thereby good for your overall well-being.
  • Prebiotics are the food for the good bacteria to keep them alive and increase their population. These fibres help them thrive, which in turn promotes probiotic growth in your gut, making for a very healthy and a happy gut!

The solution

  1. Include fermented foods like yogurt, traditionally fermented pickles, dosa, idli, sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, miso into your daily diet, these are good sources of probiotics.
  2. Have at least 5 servings of fibre rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains which are good sources of prebiotics.
  3. Pectin, fructo oligo saccharides, citrus peel fibres are great sources of prebiotics as well. The great news is that Mezmo gummies are enriched with these ingredients. So pop in a few daily J
  4. Get a good night’s sleep, because when we are sleeping our body gets a chance to repair itself, break down waste in our intestines.
  5. Please fit in some exercise and sports to increase blood flow into our digestive organs.
  6. Stay away from foods high in sugar and ultra-processed foods, these foods multiply the bad bacteria.
